Current State and Policy Implication on Standardized Training Programs of Mental Health Peer Supporters in Korea

Abstract

|
Objectives : Peer-supporters who help recovery of peer-mental health service-users through their own experience of recovery are effective, evidence-based and socially inclusive. Systemized training and support are helpful to peer-supporters' activity. Therefore, current situation of training of peer-supporters and the outcome of national-wise standardized training programs by Korean government in 2020 need to be addressed.
Methods : Curriculum of peer-supporter training program was surveyed. The outcome of national-wide standardized training program of the National Center for Mental Health in 2020 was also reviewed.
Results : Curriculum and purpose of training programs for peer-supporters are different depending on the institutions. The standardized training programs included both of necessary curriculum and elective curriculum to embrace diverse training programs. Thirty-two training centers are endorsed and trained 285 peer-supporters in standardized training program in 2020. The experience and satisfaction of training program which is surveyed by 5-point Likert scales is very positive. The participants reported that programs were very effective (3.59/5) and they felt respected (3.54/5) in the programs. However, more leisure and cultural activities are reported to be needed in the programs.
Conclusion : The experience and satisfaction of the standardized peer-supporter training program were positive, but the inclusion of further development of training program for service-user was needed. The national mental health peer-supporters standardized training programs would be platform for training and support of mental health peer-supporters.
